Homemade Easter Treats & Ideas
It's Easter time, which means we are visually assaulted by decadent choccies and temptacious hot cross buns every time we brave a trip to the supermarket.
And boy oh boy, are they enticing! But such toothsome treats aren't all that cheap, and they sure as hell aren't that healthy!
I am by no means saying we shouldn't treat ourselves - enjoying a tasty tidbit every now and then is one of the good little things in life!
But here are a few options for cutting out the guilt from a trip to the supermarket (and the subsequent snacking!):
Make your own hot cross buns.
It's actually quite easy, as long as you have the time for it.
Not only do you know exactly what's going into your homemade sweet bread, but the sense of accomplishment is unrivalled!
On top of that, fresh buns straight out the oven are unbeatable!
Bake our autumn orange pumpkins into a cake.
You heard me! Pumpkin cake is divine! The pumpkin adds the mildest of flavours, yet it results in a cake that is deliciously moist, with a lovely warming colour to boot!
Carrot cake is another sweet treat that will please all family members (the allusion to the Easter Bunny via carrots is up to you to exploit). Loaded with spices, carrot cake is both warming and filling - plus, there are a number of options regarding icing.
A simple lemon icing is fairly light, without the cost of time and money that a cream cheese topping can bring… although, if you're feeling fancy, pairing carrot cake and cream cheese icing is classic and sure to impress!
Get the kids on board.
Making cookies is fun for all the family (although by far the best part is stealing the cookie dough…). It's a double whammy: the kids get their sugar fix, and they have an opportunity to learn to cook!
Change up the egg hunt.
There was a part of my that though of hiding actual eggs… but not only can that go very wrong, eggs are no longer as affordable as they once were.
So, unless you've got chickens who are laying like the clappers, hiding items that are tangential to easter, without being chocolate, is a good way to go (carrots are a great option)!
