7 Tips For A Sustainable Veggie BBQ
Summer evenings are the time to light the barbie, hang out with friends and family and enjoy the balmy cool closing of yet another beautiful day in paradise.
Traditionally, the BBQ is the meat-lovers dream, but those of you who conform to a more herbivorous diet can still enjoy the pleasure of eating grilled goods!
Here are 7 tips to make the most of a sustainable BBQ season:
1 - Cut your veggies into large slices
Bigger chunks means less work flipping those bad boys - let's be efficient grill-masters!
Plus, bigger slices need to grill for longer, meaning more charred bits, and thus more flavour!
2 - Toss veggies in olive oil before grilling
Nobody wants a dry dinner - coat your prepped veggies in olive oil a few minutes before tossing them on the grill to allow them to absorb the olive oil and retain their moisture.
3 - Prep loads of veggies
Leftovers are the best part of any meal, in my mind!
If you're going to light up the BBQ, may as well make the most of it while it's hot - it saves turning on the stove or oven the next day (cutting your power bill just that little bit), saves you time and energy, and tastes just as good!
4 - Blanch dense veggies before grilling
If you're wanting to BBQ potatoes, beetroot or carrots, it's going to take a bit of time, and there's always the risk of some unwanted burn action.
Save yourself time by blanching said vegetables before grilling to ensure quick grill work and good texture!
5 - Choose your veggies wisely
Nobody wants a failed dinner - here are a list of our most suitable grill-worthy veggies: courgettes, eggplant, onions, fennel, asparagus, potatoes, tomatoes, capsicum and corn.
6 - Marinate for better flavour
Grilled veggies are good, but you can elevate them to a whole other level by marinating them in a zesty lemony herb garlic dressing.
Top tip here: marinate AFTER cooking - they absorb the flavours far more effectively if they're hot!
7 - Use skewers
if you've got lots of smaller vegetable chunks, popping them on skewers will save you time and concentration at the grill… plus they look nifty!
