The Best Seasonal Vegetables for a Refreshing Plant-Based Spring Cleanse

Spring cleaning doesn't necessarily need to pertain purely to one's house; a spring clean on one's body is a great way to welcome in the new season.

Now, I'm not talking about a hardcore diet or one of those fad juice cleanses. No, I'm simply referring to a slight change up of what we put on our plates.

Swapping out denser, heavier foods like potatoes, pasta and bread for lighter, more refreshing things like leafy greens, fresh spring herbs and bitter (of the good sort) vegetables will help kickstart the post-winter detoxifying process… all without you having to give up your favourite foods!

Pungent veggies: think garlic, onions, spring onions - they all certainly pack a punch! And they'll do wonders to your gut: fats and sugars are processed in the liver, and and an overload of fatty, sweet foods can lead to a sensation of congestion or “heaviness”.

Tucking in to pungent and bitter veggies aids in flushing the liver, helping you to feel light and energised.

Bitter veggies: spring is the season for our bitter vegetables - think radishes, rocket salad, lettuce, asparagus and broccoli.

Not only do they taste so fresh and vibrant, they aid in digestion and will get your body detoxifying so fast you won't know what hit you!

Eat them raw or lightly wilted/ steamed to get the best results.

Leafy greens: crops like spinach, kale, cavolo nero and mesclun salad are packed with fibre (great for geting the bowel moving smoothly), vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Even just having a side salad with dinner every day will get you feeling much healthier and happier this spring!
