What's in season in May?
May this year has marked the transition from late summer crops to our early winter favourites.
You might have already noticed that the list of available seasonal veggies has diminished somewhat in the last week or so - and so it goes! That is the reality of seasonal farming.
With great sadness, we've stopped harvesting cucumbers and cherry tomatoes.
Our medium red tomatoes are hanging in there, but it won't be long until they too finish up for the season.
Pumpkins are taking over from cucumbers and courgettes, ensuring that we get our cucurbit fix!
The small orange pumpkins (well, they're technically a squash) are quite dry in texture, while the classic Crown pumpkin have a lighter, moister consistency.
Soon to appear on the menu are butternut squash - mm mm mmmm, how good is a butternut squash and sage risotto? Perfect for a late autumn evening.

Out in the field, we're seeing more and more of our hardy winter crops: brassicas and root veggies are the flavours of the season… although we still have a patch of beans and a few beds of corn that have suddenly matured and are looking incredible (long may they last!).
With the colder weather come our loose root veggies - no more bunched carrots or beets. While we miss their lovely lush tops, the cold does encourage these veggies to convert their starches into sugars (to cope with the frosts - read our last blog for all the science!).
This means that the carrots and beets tend to taste so much sweeter and more delicious - and that's what we're here for, right?! Good food and good vibes… and good health!
