What's In Season This Winter: Your Guide to June/July Veggie Produce

Seeing as we've just entered the beginning of our annual chilly months, everything has slowed down a little - including our veggies.

The crops that are hardy enough are certainly still chipping along, but their rate of growth is greatly diminished compared to that of the warmer months we've left behind.

Leafy greens are certainly still on the menu - crops like kale, cavolo nero, collard greens, silverbeet, chard, spinach, mesclun, lettuce and pak choi - are still going strong, and will continue to do so over the next few months… thank goodness!

If you're a devoted seasonal eater, a splash of colour at this time of year is welcomed with open arms… and open mouths!!

Whenever we think of winter, the classic cold-weather root veggies spring to mind: potatoes, carrots, beetroot, radishes, onions and celeriac are a few of our staples.

They're the perfect contenders for a hearty, warming meal that will provide you with enough energy (in the form of complex carbohydrates - you know, the good ones!) to get you through these cooler days.

We also have a great range of other crops that don't fall into either of the categories above - think leeks; spring onions; herbs like coriander, thyme and parsley; pumpkins and brassicas like cauli and broccoli - to name a few of the classic soup and stew-worthy candidates!

Eating seasonally not only means you're likely to be eating fresh and locally sourced produce, it keeps us in touch with what's going on in nature.

Sure, winter offers less variety in terms of vegetable crops, but there's certainly enough to keep our plates full and tummies happy!
